Fourty Executions in One Month |

RAHANA – The Islamic Republic of Iran continued to carry out the execution sentences, and at least 40 Iranian citizens were hanged in the month of Khordad alone (May 22-June21).
Abdolhamid Rigi was hanged in Zahedan central Prison in the beginning of Khordad. A photo of the hanging scene was widely distributed on the Internet. Abdolhamid had been incarcerated at Zahedan Central Prison since his extradition from Pakistan in the spring of 2008.
Abdolmalek Rigi, leader of the Jondollah, was hanged in Tehran’s Prison at the end of Khordad. He was arrested on March of 2010, and his confessions were aired on the state television.
On June 6, reports emerged of the transfer of 26 inmates, convicted of drug trafficking, to the quarantine section of the Ghezel Hesar Prison. 13 among them were executed the next day.
There were also reports of the executions of 5 inmates in Zahedan, 5 others in Rasht, including one female prisoner. The reports of their executions have not been confirmed by the judicial authorities.
Additionally, 5 inmates were executed in Qum’s Central Prison, 3 in Isfahan’s Central Prison, 3 in Yazd Prison, 2 in Northern Khorasan, 1 in Ahvaz, 1 in Miyaneh Prison, 1 in Sarab Prison and 1 in Tehran’s Evin Prison. All the executed Iranians were convicted on drug related charges.
Iran authorities have never published the exact number of executions, and the reported cases of executions are based on information provided by the inmates or sources close to the government.
Iranian and International rights organizations have always condemned the Islamic Republic of Iran for its practice of the death penalty. Iran has the highest number of executions after China.
